Take a Journey to Celebrate Fair Trade in Fond du Lac this October

Invite a friend, take your spouse and/or the kids or go solo on a short and interesting Fair Trade Trip this October, to ten locally owned shops and cafés that carry some Fair Trade products. Visit a couple each week or do a grand tour in one day. Each business is highlighting a featured product for you to learn more about Fair Trade available in Fond du Lac.

How to Make Fond du Lac a Traffic Free Zone

Human Trafficking is a crime that that persists globally as well as in Wisconsin and even Fond du Lac.  A free half day conference on Saturday, Oct 8, will address what is being done and how you can help.
Citizens and youth grade 6 and up accompanied by a parent are invited to gather at the MPTC cafeteria for registration beginning at 8:30 am.

Time:  8:30 am – 9:00 am  refreshments available, vendor tables open             

9:00 am -12:00 pm – program described below

Place:  Moraine Park Technical College, 235 N National Ave, FDL

Program:

  • Keynote speaker: Elizabeth Marczak, Serrv International, What Fair Trade is Doing to Combat the Global Crime of  Human trafficking
  • Panel Discussion: Fond du Lac’s Efforts to Combat Human Trafficking moderated by Nancy Irizarry, Wisconsin Anti-Human Trafficking Consortium Chair.
  • Panellists are Detective Nick Hahn—Fond du Lac Police Department; Tiffany Parker—Agnesian Domestic Violence; Angel Gilbertson—ASTOP; Nicole Johnson, Executive Director–Solutions Center; Laura Kohl– Assistant District Attorney
  • Interactive “Stay Out of Traffic” experience. This will give an opportunity to work through a possible human trafficking scenario by finding resources from local agencies who could help if you were in the situation presented in the scenario.
  • Fair Trade vendors including Just Fare Market, Gallery & Frame and Living Light Studio as well some of the nonprofit partner organizations will have booths to visit.

A drawing for a prize will be held at each business. To enter, leave your completed passport at one of the businesses by the end of business on Oct 16. Originally posted on August 10, 2015. Just B-Still – Massage Studio and Green Cafe was recognized on July 30, 2015, as a member of Fond du Lac Fair Trade Town. The occasion was their one-year anniversary open house, inviting the community in to learn more about this unique little jewel of a business at 1211 Rickmeyer Dr, behind the Shell Station on highway 23 and Rolling Meadows Drive. According to the owner, Ann Sinisi, among the values that are behind the Green Cafe coming into being are using seasonal, local, organic or chemical-free and unprocessed ingredients whenever possible.

The executive director Mary Patricia Voell and a staff of volunteers have worked through the winter and spring to bring new products and a new look to the shop.

In our local area, Just Fare Market, Fond du Lac Fair Trade Town, Moraine Park Technical College, UW-Fond du Lac, and Marian University are connecting to educate and celebrate with a number of special events throughout the month. We encourage everyone to attend these important events to learn more about how our support of artisans and farmers in developing countries can truly make a difference. All events are free and open to the public.

Fond du Lac Celebrates One Year as a Fair Trade Town

Originally posted on March 4, 2014. One year ago, Fond du Lac earned the designation “Fair Trade Town” – the 32nd in the nation and the third in Wisconsin, following Madison and Milwaukee. As a Fair Trade Town, Fond du Lac encourages its citizens to be conscientious consumes who advocate for the principles of Fair Trade. Fair Trade helps farmers and craftspeople in developing countries build sustainable businesses that positively influence their communities, providing fair wages, environmentally sound methods, and community improvement projects.
