During Fair Trade Month, people across America come together to learn about, promote and celebrate Fair Trade.  Events in Fond du Lac include a Fair Trade Film Festival with movies scheduled on Wednesday, October 23 and Monday, October 28.  Both start at 6 p.m. in the McLean Room at Fond du Lac Public Library.  On October 23, Black Gold will be shown.  It focuses on coffee-growers and their struggle to earn a fair wage.  “You’ll never look at your cup of coffee in the same way” after seeing this film!

The Price of Sugar will be shown on Monday, October 28.  See how sugar production in the Dominican Republic started and how the gigantic plantations affect both people and land. Admission is free to both movies.

WINDOW DISPLAY AT THE GALLERY AND FRAME SHOP DURING FAIR TRADE MONTH

The  Gallery & Frame Shop at 94 S. Main St, Fond du Lac is showcasing Fair Trade products of brilliant colours and beautiful designs during October 2013 –  Fair Trade Month.  Julie Balson, the owner of Gallery & Frame Shop, said, “We’re proud to highlight Fair Trade products this month.  Fair Trade is important to everyone in its impact on the world economy and well-being of all people.”  Fair Trade products on display are available from the Gallery and Frame Shop, Just Fare Market, Old Mill Plaza,  N7645 N Peebles Lane, Living Light Studio, 314 4th Street and Village Market Specialty Foods,  806 S Main Street.

Fair Trade supports farmers and craftspeople in developing countries who are socially and economically marginalized. These producers lack economic opportunity and often face steep hurdles in finding markets and customers for their goods. Fair trade is much more than just trade. At the core of the fair trade model is a direct, cooperative, and in-depth relationship between buyers and sellers that keeps all of the principles of Fair Trade at the forefront.
