FOND DU LAC – At the invitation of the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac Student Government Association, along with the Multicultural Club a presentation was given to introduce students to the basic concepts of Fair Trade. Johnathan Stroud, UW-Fond du Lac SGA president, enlisted the help of Just Fare Market for an introduction to Fair Trade. Johnathan and others have embarked on the process of becoming a Fair Trade Campus

Fair Trade 101 was presented on Wednesday, Sept. 20 by Kathleen Stetter from the Just Fare Education Committee.  Kathleen is senior lecturer emeritus from UW-Oshkosh and a frequent speaker on various aspects of Fair Trade. The presentation was coordinated with an exhibit of Fair Trade products in the Oberreich Gallery in the University Center Commons at UW-Fond du Lac.

Just Fare selected handcrafted Fair Trade art items with the universal themes “tree of life” and “family”.  One of the featured art objects is the silk, embroidered Heirloom Tree of Dreams wall hanging. The master craftsman Israfil works with Zordozi Original, a workshop of a handicraft marketing organization in Kolkata, India. This complex work of art that requires enormous amounts of time to complete.

Other featured tree of life images are unique wall hangings from a recycled oil drum and from a jute weaving with wool embroidery.

Other objects include delicate mother and child bronze sculptures from Burkina Faso, an art using the timeworn yet effective lost wax metal casting method.  Soapstone in Kenya, Springstone in Zimbabwe, and Mpingo wood are shown fashioned into family images.

Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday from Sept. 20 to Oct. 27. For more information, fdl.uwc.edu.
